Master I THINK I Want To See

Mark 10:49-51 “... Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you.” He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus. Jesus said to him in reply, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied to him, “Master, I want to see.”

Jesus could have called the blind man to Himself without the help of His Apostles, but He didn’t. Instead, He wanted the Apostles to help bring the man to Christ, even if they were irritated by his cries. They had to put aside their selfishness to serve this needy man. In doing so, Jesus was giving them the chance to see the blind man differently: as someone to be served rather than as a burden.

So they did as Jesus asked them, and the blind man came to Him. But what if they had refused? What if they had given in to their frustration with his noisiness and left him to get up and find his way to Christ on his own? By helping him, they saw the importance of their role in Christ’s redemptive work.

Jesus was then able to speak to the man who had been crying out to Him in a meaningful way and give him the healing he so deeply desired. If the man had been left to find his way on his own, he might have missed Jesus, turned to someone else, received no healing, and never become a son of God.

His request was that of vision, of being able to see. So do we want the same for others and for ourselves? If so, do we live out this desire? Do we come to people in their blindness and lead them to Jesus, or do we leave them stuck in the blindness sin brings on, out of fear and a false sense and understanding of compassion and mercy?  

What do we do, however, when the blind refuse to be led to Jesus and try to keep us from Him as well? We must resist these troubling influences. If they refuse Him, then we must eventually shake the dust from our feet and move on, without allowing them to hold us back with them.
