Blinded By The Light

Fr. Morrison, one of the priests at my parish, spoke this morning of a woman he met in Mexico who used to live in a sewer. He spoke of how we choose to stay in our own darkness because of the pain that the light causes us when we first come out of the darkness. I didn’t think much of the story until a few hours later, while reflecting on my own difficulties of accepting the light of friendship and trust after years of living in the dark sewer of isolation and distrust of men.

My friendship with my housemate, Brian, is an intense exposure to light. He is very forgiving, not jealous, at least not in an obvious way, loving, compassionate, patient, and merciful. After having lived in the darkness that is the opposite of all these virtues, his light hurts my eyes that have grown unaccustomed to darkness. Lord help me not to turn back.
